Since its creation in 1977 and its first cycle in 1980, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture has recognized exceptional architecture worldwide, while driving critical debate and facilitating the systematic collection of valuable data documenting building ideas and practices.
This elective course will draw on these materials to:
— Identify the major debates that have taken place over the past 50 years within the disciplinary fields of architecture and urbanism.
— Explore a variety of forms that can be used to analyse and assess the built environment.
— Impart writing skills to complement other architectural critical tools and strategies such as drawing and representation.
Students will be exposed to and develop competences in architectural writing and criticism, focusing on critical reading, in-person observation, critical analysis of existing buildings, and the evaluation of objective parameters in the built environment.
This elective course is being organized in collaboration with the Education Programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.
