COVID-19: Study suggests that football does not appear to be a high-risk activity

A study by the Portugal Football School of the Portuguese Football Federation in which ISPUP participated, suggests that football is not a sport with a high risk of respiratory exposure for the transmission of COVID-19. This result is in line with the “medium risk” classification attributed by the Portuguese Directorate-General for Health to the modality, in August.

What is the role of mobile technologies in the fight against COVID-19?

Two researchers from ISPUP published a comment on the role of mobile technologies - a concept that includes smartphone applications, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth - in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers draw attention to the importance of these technologies in optimizing strategies to face the pandemic, but they also highlight the various constraints inherent in their use, namely those related to data privacy and the invasion of personal space.

Study found a 20 cm height difference between young people in countries with the tallest and shortest population

A new global analysis led by Imperial College London, in which ISPUP participated, found a 20 cm height difference between young people in countries with the highest and lowest population. One possible explanation for these differences may be the practice of inadequate nutrition. 

Aggressiveness of care at the end of the life of cancer patients in Portugal

Portugal has a high prevalence of therapeutic aggressiveness at the end of life for cancer patients - 7 out of 10 who died in a public hospital in mainland Portugal between 2010 and 2015 received care considered to be aggressive - according to a study published in ESMO Open of the European Society of Medical Oncology.

Improving knowledge about prematurity among parents with very preterm infants is important

Parents who experienced having at least one very premature child (born before 32 weeks of gestation) have gaps in knowledge regarding the causes and consequences of prematurity. The conclusion is of a study by ISPUP published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing.

Project will help to assess maternal and child health care during the COVID-19 pandemic

ISPUP is part of the European project Improving MAternal Newborn CarE in the EURO Region, IMAGINE EURO, which is collecting data on the quality and resilience of the maternal and newborn health services among countries of the World Health Organization (WHO) European Region during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ISPUP researcher was awarded by the Ordem dos Médicos

A clinical research study coordinated by André Moreira was awarded the “Banco Carregosa/SRNOM Award”, with the total value of 20.000 euros. The work showed that it is possible to improve the diagnosis and treatment of asthma through biomarkers in exhaled air, which may help to define a more personalized treatment for patients.

ISPUP researcher awarded at the International Symposium on Environmental Pollution

Joana Madureira was awarded the Best Scientific Presentation for a work which showed that continued exposure to particulate matter - one of the most serious air pollutants in terms of public health - inside homes, may pose health risks, particularly to children's health.
