Looking Back to the Future

As the current pluriannual cycle of FCT financing concludes, we are eager to share some of the key activities, initiatives, and transformative changes that have shaped CEF.UP from 2018 to 2023. We also wish to celebrate the achievements that your support has made possible.

In CEF.UP’s application for funding six years ago, our primary goal for this period was to advance the frontier of knowledge. Our researchers have significantly contributed to this through pioneering studies in Economics, Finance, and Management. Their findings have not only been published in top-tier journals but also presented at prestigious international conferences. To support these endeavors, we established a Data Center equipped with a high-capacity server and comprehensive software licenses, enabling detailed work with large-scale data and complex model simulations. Additionally, our seminars brought cutting-edge research from world-renowned scholars to our community, while our Advanced Courses provided exposure to state-of-the-art research methods and techniques.

Our second goal focused on disseminating research to positively impact academia and society. The work of our researchers has played a crucial role in informing policy debates and shaping decisions across various levels of government and the private sector. This engagement is further supported through our Work-in-Progress seminars and regularly featured in this Research Bulletin.

Our third major goal has been to educate and enhance the skills of both young and mature researchers. CEF.UP hosts FEP’s PhD programs in Economics and Management, providing extensive resources that foster successful academic and professional careers, tailored to meet the evolving demands of the global economic landscape.

During this period, CEF.UP also underwent significant organizational changes. In 2021, our Scientific Council enacted new Bylaws, expanding our scientific scope to include research in Management. Additionally, we introduced clear and flexible procedures for the entry and exit of integrated researchers and implemented incentives for publishing high-quality research.

Below, you will find an overview of the thematic contributions highlighted in our funding application for 2025-2029, along with key facts and figures from 2018-2023.

Macroeconomics and Growth (MACGROW)

Our researchers have conducted in-depth studies on the impact of automation on the labor market, examined the nuances of monetary policy within endogenous growth models, and developed as well as popularized innovative Wavelet tools for analyzing macroeconomic phenomena. Their work has shed light on critical issues such as wage polarization and inequality and enhanced our understanding of the New Keynesian Phillips Curve.

Markets and Industrial Organization (MARKINO)
Our researchers have deepened our understanding of how firms’ strategic decisions are shaped by customer information, analyzed labor market dynamics through comprehensive datasets, and investigated the impact of regional economics on innovation and sustainability. Their work has provided valuable insights to regulators, refined privacy strategies, and significantly contributed to sustainability efforts.

Organizations and Management (ORGMAN)
Our researchers have enhanced corporate finance theory through developments in real options theory and dynamic models. Their contributions in customer engagement are recognized globally, and their studies on digital entrepreneurship effectively bridge academic research with practical marketing strategies. Additionally, their research in CSR/sustainability has deepened our understanding of corporate corruption.

Theory and Methods (THEOMET)
Our researchers have strengthened theoretical foundations by introducing new concepts and strategies that tackle key theoretical issues. They have enriched methodological tools with advanced computational techniques for complex data analysis and deepened our historical understanding of economic theories, particularly focusing on social ontology and its methodological implications.

Did you know that from 2018 to 2023, CEF.UP’s researchers published 490 research articles, with two-thirds appearing since 2021? Over 20% were co-authored with international colleagues, and nearly a quarter were featured in ABS 3-4 journals. Additionally, our researchers delivered 270 conference presentations. As of 2024, CEF.UP counts with 64 integrated researchers, 45 collaborating researchers, and 50 PhD students.
