Science @ U.Porto

Highlights

Applications for IJUP’26 open on 1 February, with the usual Oral Communication and Poster presentation formats. The 19th edition of the initiative will take place on 6, 7 and 8 May at the Abel Salazar Building and aims to promote research within the U.Porto student community (BSc and MSc). A total of 37 R&D Units linked to the U.Porto ecosystem will receive more than 10 million euros in additional public funding for the modernisation and restructuring of their scientific equipment under FCT's EQUIPAR+2 call. Recently launched, the 2026 Call Plan allows the U.Porto scientific community to anticipate forthcoming funding opportunities. Particular emphasis is placed on the STEP – Business R&D&I calls under Compete 2030, co-promoted with ENESII entities (U.Porto), in the areas of Energy, Digital and Biotechnology, with a total allocation of €325 million. ESEP has officially joined the University of Porto as its 15th Organic and Research Unit, strengthening existing synergies in Health research and expanding opportunities for scientific collaboration. More information here.

CaixaImpulse Health Innovation 2026 Call

Aims to transfer scientific knowledge to society by accelerating the creation of products, services and companies in the life sciences, through support for innovative biomedical projects. It covers human health projects in the areas of therapeutics, medical devices, diagnostics and digital health. Funding is phased and may reach a total of up to €700,000: up to €50,000 (Phase 1), €150,000 (Phase 2) and €500,000 (Phase 3).

The S+T+ARTS Prize

Recognises projects at the intersection of science, technology and the arts with an impact on economic and social innovation. There are two main categories: Grand Prize – Artistic Exploration (artistic works or exploration with the potential to influence how technology is used or perceived) and Grand Prize – Innovative Collaboration (innovative collaboration between industry/technology and the artistic/creative sector) The prize amounts to €20,000 per category.

DEFENSE + SCIENCE: Call for Exploratory Projects 2025

Funding for applied research addressing security and defence challenges. Proposals must fall within applied Defence Technologies (aerospace, applied acoustics, robotics and autonomous systems), organisational engineering and human behaviour in a military context, or societal challenges in the field of security and defence. Maximum funding per project is €50,000 for projects with a duration of up to 18 months.

Maria de Sousa Award

With a value of €30,000, this prize, promoted by the Portuguese Medical Association and the BIAL Foundation, will support five young Portuguese researchers (aged 35 or under) carrying out research projects in the field of Health Sciences.
